ARS JAPONICA @ AVA Galleria, Helsinki.

At the time of writing this entry, we are in the final 48 hours before our trip to Finland to set up the ARS JAPONICA group show. Our excitement is building with each passing hour and seeing this very special project come to fruition is a very rewarding experience.

Taiji Matsuda, Haruaki Toku, Kunihiko Nakano, Masato Sunami, Hori Shinji, Yoshihisa Sano, Kotaro Hachinohe, Hirotaka Ichikawa and Ryohei Obata are the featured artists of this show. We have selected this collection of award-winning artists to introduce the Finnish public to contemporary Japanese works by some of Kansai’s most innovative and original emerging artists.

In this second stage of the Finland-Japan Art Exchange 2010, we will be showcasing 19 pieces at AVA Galleria from September 1st to 19th. This exhibition marks the continuing collaboration with AVA Galleria to promote our artists in each others’ countries.

【Rainbow Black -虹色の黒】

'Bokushoku-Shichisai' meaning 'seven black colors', is an important term in Japanese Calligraphy and Suiboku-ga(ink painting). The idea behind this term is that 'black' is not simply a flat, single pigment, but rather, a subtle and dynamic blend of tones. It has been said that all colors are present in black and that the subtle light and dark shades of Japanese ink in combination with the artist's calligraphic style reveals and mimics the spectrum of human emotion and nature's unique palette. The story expressed in this exhibition is composed in haiku and portrayed thru pure white, lacquer black(kizairo), gold, vermillion, ultramarine blue pigment and light purple.

Itch − Kenji Ichikawa − has previously been selected three times for the Taro Okamoto Contemporary Art Prize Exhibition, and expected to do great things in the future. Hatch − Kotaro Hachinohe − previously belonged to the pivotal centre of the Japanese calligraphy world, and along with continued study, his future is one filled also with great expectations. Working day and night on his pieces, in a corner of Tokyo is Itch. Holding his brush day and night in a corner of New York is Hatch. While Itch’s Ikebana series and Hatch’s trace K series have been acquired by many overseas collectors, they are yet to appear on the horizon in their home ? Japan. The same Itch and Hatch met by coincidence last Autumn at Kitai Gallery and will thus unite for this exhibition ‘Itchka Hatchka’ (Itch or Hatch)..
